NAXOS PORT

Naxos Port, situated on the edge of Chora (Naxos Town), is the main gateway to the largest and most fertile island in the Cyclades. Unlike smaller islands, Naxos features an expansive road network that stretches from the lively, monumental harbor into high mountain ranges, traditional agricultural valleys, and long sandy coastlines, making the port a perfect base for island road trips.

Top Attractions at Naxos Port

  • The Portara (Great Door): The iconic, massive 6th-century BC marble gate of an unfinished temple to Apollo, sitting on the islet of Palatia connected to the port by a walkway.
  • The Waterfront Promenade: A bustling, wide seaside street lined with traditional tavernas, cafes, and local shops selling Naxian cheeses and liqueurs.
  • The Venetian Kastro: A historic, fortified medieval citadel sitting on the hill directly above the port, featuring winding stone alleys and old mansions.
  • Chora Old Market: The labyrinth of narrow, whitewashed pedestrian pathways located just behind the port road, packed with small boutiques and spice shops.
  • The Sphinx of Naxos Replica & Harbor Square: The central gathering plaza near the ferry docks, featuring local architectural monuments and seating areas.

Best Day Trips from Naxos Port

  • Apeiranthos Mountain Village: Drive 26 kilometers into the mountainous heart of Naxos to walk through a unique village built entirely of marble, featuring stone towers and quiet squares.
  • Plaka & Agios Prokopios Beaches: Take a short 10-to-15-minute drive south to experience kilometers of fine golden sand and crystal-clear turquoise waters.
  • The Kouros of Apollonas: Drive to the northernmost tip of the island to see a massive, 10-meter unfinished ancient marble statue lying in an ancient quarry.
  • The Temple of Demeter (Sangri): Travel inland to explore a beautifully restored 6th-century BC white marble temple set in a fertile agricultural valley.
  • Filoti Village & Mount Zeus: Drive to the island’s largest mountain village, located at the foot of Mount Zeus, the highest peak in the Cyclades (ideal for hiking).

Scenic Drives Starting from the Port

The Mountain Marble Route (Chora to Apeiranthos via Chalki)

An incredible drive that climbs quickly away from the sea into the lush, olive-grown Tragea Valley before ascending steep mountain switchbacks.

  • Highlights: Venetian towers dotting the landscape, a mandatory stop at the traditional Kitron distillery in Chalki, and panoramic mountain vistas.

The Rugged North Coast Loop (Chora to Apollonas via Engares)

A dramatic, wild route that hugs the northern coastline, bordered by high cliffs on one side and the open Aegean Sea on the other.

  • Highlights: Driving past the historic Tower of Agia, sweeping views of the northern sea channel, and descending into the quiet fishing village of Apollonas.

Travel Tips for Driving Around Naxos Port

  • The Promenade Closes to Cars at Night: During summer evenings, the main port road is blocked to vehicular traffic to create a pedestrian walking zone; utilize the peripheral bypass road instead.
  • Park in the Large Public Lots: Free public parking lots are located at the edges of the port area (near the central square and the marina jetty); do not attempt to park in the narrow Chora alleys.
  • Expect Steeps and Sharp Hairpins: Naxos is highly mountainous; the interior roads feature steep gradients and sharp curves that require confident use of low gears.
  • Watch for Livestock on Mountain Roads: Keep a sharp eye out for goats and sheep crossing the asphalt unexpectedly when driving through the central highlands near Filoti and Koronos.
  • Arrive Early for Ferry Returns: If you are dropping off your rental car at the port before catching a ship, allow extra time, as the port roundabout gets heavily congested during scheduled arrivals

What is Lorem Ipsum? Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.
